A brief history of the Monroe ABC System

The Monroe ABC Board was established in September 1963, with the first store opening in the Plyler Building at 312 North Church Street on December 3, 1963.

In June 1964, a 5460 square foot building was built at 407 West Roosevelt Boulevard. In May 1974, a new self-service 3742 square foot store was built at the site of the old Henderson Roller Mill on North Church Street, and the first Church Street store was then closed.

Another major improvement in the system was renovation of the Roosevelt Boulevard store to self-service in September 1976.

In March of 1996 the decision was made to close the Church Street Store. Operations at the Church Street Store ceased on April 30, 1996. All employees were transferred to the Roosevelt Boulevard store.

The decision was made prior to the closing of the Church Street store to construct a new ABC store including the administrative offices. The new location was purchased on Dickerson Boulevard. Construction began on the 9300 square foot building in November of 1996 with a completion date of August 1997. Additional warehouse space of 1600 square feet was approved in September 2005. Construction was completed in February 2006.

The ABC store still operates from the Dickerson Boulevard site. Several renovations have been made with more still to come.
